“A dream come true”

DELIVERING VALUE SINCE 1942

Since 1942, Pescapuerta has been at the forefront of innovation in the fishing industry. Founded by José Puerta Oviedo, who transformed a small business in Vigo into a global company, Pescapuerta has set milestones such as the launch of its first freezer vessel in 1968 and international expansion in the 80s. Through mixed companies in Mauritania, Argentina and Namibia, it has adapted to industry demands, combining tradition with innovation. Today, its commitment to excellence, sustainability and quality lives on, bringing the best of the sea to the world and establishing itself as a benchmark in the global fishing market.

1942

The dream begins

José Puerta Oviedo, founder of Pescapuerta, embarked on this new adventure to become a fishing vessel owner, laying the foundations of a company that would soon transform the industry.

1957

Acquisition of Rio Miñor

First boat repaired by José Puerta himself. It sailed the tides trolling albacore and Atlantic pomfret.

1965

Launch of the Ramsés

First multi-purpose vessel built directly by Pescapuerta, reflecting the company’s ambition to innovate and blaze trails using its own resources.

1967

Construction of the José Cesareo

First trawling vessel, departing from traditional artisanal fishing gear and the construction of wooden boats.

1968

Construction of the first freezer vessel

Named Alcocero, on its maiden voyage it explored the then far-flung fishing grounds of Angola. This vessel routinely fished along the whole West African coast.

1971

Constitution of Pescapuerta S.A.

1974

Initial activity in the fishing grounds of Namibia

Back then, regulated by a body with no jurisdictional waters or catch limit issues.

1975

Inauguration of the first large freezer vessel

José Puerta commissioned a new design for the occasion.

1977

Launch of the first factory ship

Named Pescavigo Uno, it was one of the largest, most modern Spanish vessels, capable not only of freezing fish but also of producing fish meal.

1983

Pescapuerta arrives in the Falklands

It does so with the vessel Pescapuerta 3, and it became clear that this could be an important fishing ground. This led the company to commission that same year the construction of two vessels designed to fish in these waters: the Pescapuerta 4 and the Pescavigo 2.

1986

Launch of the Nuevo Alcocero

101-metre vessel, the largest freezer trawler in Western Europe at the time. Currently named the Beagle.

1986-87

Scientific expedition to the Antarctic

After a public tender to select state-of-the-art vessels capable of operating in ice-covered waters and equipped with human and technological elements suited to extreme situations, the Nuevo Alcocero and the Pescapuerta Cuarto were chosen.

1994

Constitution of the first mixed company in the Falklands

Partnering with the company Fortuna, Pescapuerta provided the vessels Pescavigo Dos, which was renamed Petrel; the Pescavigo Uno, rechristened the Capricorn; and the Nuevo Alcocero, which became known as the Beagle.

2000

Constitution of Grupo Pescapuerta S.A.

A genuine multinational, the result of merging different companies over the years. Left behind were the company Pesquera José Puerta Oviedo, several joint-ownership companies owning each of the small vessels, Pescapuerta S.A., Frigoríficos Puerta Prado S.A., Pescavigo S.A, and Cefalópodos Congelados S.A.

2006

José Puerta Prado becomes president

after José Puerta Oviedo passes away.

2009

Acquisition of the distribution company Elmar

The group's most diversified business line, as it deals not only with fish products.

2011

Pescapuerta becomes a shareholder in Frigoríficos de Oya

Frialia.

2014

Fortitude Fishing is created

after the sale of the shares in Tunacor, in Namibia, to trade shallow-water Cape hake and other species.

2015

Loligo Seafood is created

to trade Patagonian squid, hake and other species from the fishing grounds of the Falkland Islands.

2015

Polaris Ursae Minoris is created

to trade Argentina red shrimp and hake catches from Argentina's fishing grounds.

2016

Pescapuerta Trade is created

to trade other market opportunities, such as products from factories in Morocco.

2020

Alpha Pêche is created

after getting back to fishing business in Mauritania, in order to trade products caught in these waters, where the group went back to fishing with the vessels Alpha Pêche 1 and Alpha Pêche 2.

2021

Launch of the Falcon

One of the most recent units.

2023

Initiation in aquaculture, under the brand name Vanaper Trade

Dedicated to shrimp farming in Peru, with extensive natural pools supplied with water from the nearby sea via a canal.

2024

Launch of the Prión

With a revolutionary design featuring a forward bow and a length of 85 metres, it’s the largest fishing vessel built in the Ría de Vigo in the last twenty years.
